Pay off your debts and improve your credit

Debts are baleful and should be paid off as early as possible. You should try to take control of your debt before it takes control of your finances. Getting into debt is actually easier than coming out of it. Paying off your debts isn’t an easy process and involves lots of strategies and patience. Debt hurts your credit and so you should pay off debt to repair your credit.

Tips on paying off your debts

The strategies that you should follow:

* You should take control of your debts the moment you notice that your finances are going haywire. Prepare a realistic budget by jotting down your total income as well as all kinds of expenditures, fixed and varying. Prioritize your expenses so that you can manage your cash accordingly.

* Most of the people fail to realize that you will have to pay the money at some point of time while using credit cards to buy items. So, understand that you will have to pay up sooner or later. Use cash to buy things instead of credit cards to avoid expending more.

* Build an emergency fund which can help in emergency situations. You can do that by saving money from your everyday expenses if you practice frugal living. Put this money into the emergency fund. If you face problems later in making payments on your credit accounts, you will be able to use this money to pay off the debts.

* You should also try to minimize the usage of your credit cards. If you have availed of enough credit already, don’t apply for a new one.

* If you have the ability, make more than minimum payments each month on your accounts. If you do this, you are not only paying for the interest rate but your principal balance is also getting reduced. Also, creditors tend to increase the interest rate if you tend to carry high balance on your cards, thereby hurting your credit. So, pay down the balance by making more than minimum payments.

If you are facing problems in making the monthly payments, try to talk to your creditors. Convince them that you are in financial hardship and request them to work out a repayment plan according to your affordability. However, if quite an amount of time has passed after you have missed payments on any accounts, first check with the Statute of Limitations (SOL) on the account. SOL is the time period within which you can be sued by the creditor for non-payments of dues. So, if the SOL has expired you can dispute the item off your credit report to improve your credit. The creditor won’t be able to sue you for non-payment of the debt.

As per the Fair Credit Reporting Act, every adult American citizen has the right to receive a free annual credit report from each of the three credit bureaus. However, many people are either not aware of this right or are not sure how to go about getting a free copy of credit report. As a result, there is many a credit report scam, conning people into paying money for getting something that is already theirs.

Free Copy Of Credit Report Scams

When trying to get a free copy of credit report, it is easy to get misled by advertisements or promotional emails that claim to do all the legwork for you. Truth is, getting your free annual credit report is not much work so you do not need a third party to mediate. It is your right to get a free copy of your credit report and if internet advertisements are making you believe otherwise, you are being scammed. A credit report scam might covertly sign you up for an expensive credit monitoring or repair service that you do not really need. On the other hand, some credit report scams are cleverly disguised identity theft operations that will ask for all your information to get you a free copy of credit report and steal all your information.

Free Annual Credit Report Without A Credit Card

When looking for your free annual credit check, if a website asks you for your credit card details, it should be an immediate red flag. You can get your free annual credit report without a credit card from all three credit reporting bureaus. Websites asking you for credit card details and other personal information including your name, address, social security number and the like are more likely to be a credit report scam. Log on to AnnualCreditReport.com and you will be able to get your free annual credit report without a credit card.

Free Credit Score From AnnualCreditReport.com

If you Google “free annual credit” and your search leads you to a site other than annualcreditreport.com, and the site asks for credit card details or other personal information to get you your free credit score, you should quit immediately because it is probably a credit report scam. AnnualCreditReport.com is sponsored by all three consumer reporting agencies – Experian, TransUnion and Equifax and is the only website authorized by the Federal Trade Commission to provide you with your free annual credit report. Your only other option for a free annual credit check may be CreditKarma.com; however it only offers a free TransUnion credit score.

Tips For Getting Your Annual Credit Reports

The Fair Credit Reporting Act entitles you to one free annual credit report each year so here are some tips:

Always double check the address you type in your browser as there is many a credit report scam with names similar to AnnualCreditReport.com and they might try to hoodwink you.

Instead of getting your free annual credit report from all three credit bureaus at the same time, space them out over the course of the year so you can view a new one every few months.

Download your free annual credit history immediately as for security reasons; it may not be available later. You might also have the option of getting your free credit score posted to you.

If you have already accessed your free annual credit report and need another copy, approach any of the consumer reporting agencies (Equifax, TransUnion or Experian) directly instead of using a third party and running the risk of a credit report scam.

In the internet age, fraudulent credit transactions are becoming increasingly common. If fraudsters gain access to your personal information, they might try to obtain credit pretending to be you. This is known as identity fraud, which is a result of identity theft. While you must take every step possible to prevent frauds from gaining access to your sensitive personal information, a new method being recommended by several credit and finance experts and credit report agencies is – freezing your credit.

Credit Freeze – What It Means To Freeze Your Credit Report

Several states in USA now allow consumers to place a credit freeze on their credit report. In simple terms, this means an individual reserves the right of access to their credit report, only temporaril lifting the credit freeze when required. By placing a freeze on your credit report, you are preventing an identity thief from opening credit accounts in your name. If potential creditors, future employers or anyone else needs access to your credit history, you will have to specifically grant them this access. Current creditors however will continue to have access to your report, irrespective of you freezing your credit. Be rest assured, freezing credit does not have any effect on your credit score at all.

How To Credit Freeze – Following Security Freeze Laws

Every individual state in USA has its own credit freezing laws and consumer must follow state laws to know exactly how to freeze credit. Some states provide credit report freeze protection to all residents; while others only allow identity theft victims to place a security freeze. In most states, identity theft victims are not required to pay any fees when freezing their credit history, however all other consumers may be required to pay a fee, which is usually about $10. This fee is payable to each of three credit bureaus – Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Pay the fee to each credit reporting agency individually and place a remember freezing credit with all three is essential or your credit history might still be accessible by others.

Freezing Credit Report Vs Credit Fraud Alert

Freezing your credit report and placing a credit fraud alert on your credit file are both ways to minimize further damage to your credit history. If you have had your identity stolen and have placed a fraud alert on your credit file, potential creditors are required to be doubly careful as there may be an attempt to obtain fraudulent credit. However, often this means a creditor simply gets in touch with you to verify your identity or employs “reasonable policies and procedures” to do so. This however is not always a foolproof method as the fraudster may easily pretend to be you and have access to all the identifying information about you.

Freezing credit reports on the other hand means third parties, including potential creditors cannot access your credit history. Therefore, a fraudster cannot apply for new credit and therefore providing you greater protection against a credit scam.

Freeze Credit And Stop All Credit Fraud?

Unfortunately, credit freezing is not a magical solution to all your credit fraud problems. When you freeze credit, you are taking a step towards preventing future credit scams and fraudulent credit applications. However, freezing credit cannot protect you from an ID thief using your current credit accounts, unless you place a block on them. Also, several credit accounts, especially for household services like electricity, telephone or internet, can be opened without a comprehensive credit check. In such a case, even if you freeze your credit report, you cannot prevent the ID thief from pretending to be you.

With the growing occurrence of ID theft, freezing credit is definitely an option worth considering. However, do not rely on a credit freeze to protect you alone. Make sure you take other measures to prevent and protect yourself from credit fraud and scam.

Numerous credit consumers have to face rejection from financial institutions owing to credit errors which were not caused by them. It is therefore important to repair your credit report and improve your score as soon as possible.

Alison had a credit card with a credit institution. Although Alison had been very regular with her payments, owing to a system error, her payments were not recorded and were being credited to another account. Her account showed defaults for over two and half months. Alison was completely unaware of this, till she applied for a mortgage. Her application was rejected owing to her repayment history.

She eventually took this up with her credit card company and had the issue resolved, but was unaware that the credit card company had not informed the credit bureau and these listings stay on your report for a five year period.

Credit Report Error Examples

Alison’s credit report error story is not an isolated one. Some common examples of credit errors are:

Payments not credited to your accounts.

Default interest wrongly charged to your accounts.

Incorrect account set-ups there by causing payments to come out early and placing your account in arrears.

You do not have any dealings with the lender listed.

The listing on your credit report was over 5 years ago.

The same credit default has been recorded multiple times.

The debt default listed had nothing to do with you and you have not acquired the debt.

These are just some examples of the kind of credit errors that may creep into your credit report.

Improve Your Score with Correct Information

In addition to the five elements such as payment history, balances owed, new credit applied for, types of credit and length of credit history, your credit report also records the following:

1. Your name (including previously used names)

2. Your address (including previous addresses)

3. Court judgments.

4. Dishonored cheques.

5. Bankruptcy orders etc.

To improve your score the first thing you must do is ensure all the information on your credit report is absolutely accurate. Also it is important to know what is included in your score and which companies report to credit bureaus before you wage a battle with creditors and credit bureaus because sometimes what might seem like a credit error to you might actually be a rent default you had forgotten about.

Credit Report Repair – Get Rid of a Credit Error

The next issue is to solve any credit report errors that might have occurred on your score. Follow some of the steps below to improve your score and repair your credit report.

Obtain a copy of your credit report regularly (as often as six months if need be) to ensure that no unwanted listings and credit errors have occurred.

In the event that there is a listing that has wrongly appeared on your credit report, get in touch with your credit provider disputing the credit error and question the credit report error immediately.

In certain cases the credit provider might have an external resolution system and in that case you might to file a credit error complaint with them to improve your score.

Finally if none of the other avenues work, talk to the appropriate credit bureau and raise the issue with them by lodging a formal complaint about credit report errors and how it is affecting your score.

The Federal Trade Commission regularly handles complaints about credit errors so you could complain to them to restore your score.

Be prepared to fight a legal battle if necessary. This is your credit report and you should not take credit errors lying down. If a creditor will not fix a credit report error, inform them you are willing to hand over the matter for your solicitors to manage.

If you are unable to repair your credit report alone, seek advice from a credit repair company but be careful as there are several scams out there.

As we experience a credit squeeze like never before, it is mandatory that consumers understand what a good FICO credit score is and how it can be improved for a better personal credit rating.

What is Your Fico Score Chart Made Up Of?

Primarily your Fico credit score is dependent on the following factors:

Length of Credit History – This usually contains data like the time since the account has been active and classifies them based on account type (e.g. consumer credit contract, hire purchase, residential mortgage etc). It also contains data regarding the last time there was activity on the account. This usually accounts for about 15% of your personal credit rating.

Repayments history – This is the most important part of your FICO score chart as this accounts for 35% of a good credit rating. The data contained in this relates to repayment information classed according to account type. It also displays the presence of any adverse public records e.g. bankruptcies, court judgments, writs etc and also amounts due on accounts in arrears and the time since these amounts were due. This section of your FICO credit score also shows delinquent accounts which have been paid as agreed.

New credit contracts entered into – This accounts for only 10% of your personal credit rating and contains information such as new credit enquiries classed on the basis of type of account. It also shows the time since the last credit enquiry was made and if good credit history has been reestablished since the last time the account encountered problems.

Balances owed on each credit contract – As it would suggest this part of your fico score chart deals singularly with balances outstanding on credit contracts classed on the basis of account type. This also displays the proportion of balances owed to the total credit limit available with regard to revolving credit contracts (e.g. Lines of Credit). This accounts for about 30% of your score

Types of credit- This displays the types of credit used by the consumer e.g. retail accounts, mortgages, credit cards etc. This accounts for another 10% of your Fico credit score.

Your FICO score chart takes into consideration all the factors mentioned above and FICO scores consider not only the negative factors but also the positives. In addition it would help to know that while banks and finance institutions may consider a lot of outside factors while making decisions, your FICO score only considers the information available on your personal credit rating.

How To Improve Credit Ratings?

Good Fico credit scores are important and if you would like to restore your credit score it is important that you know how to improve credit rating.

Your repayment history is extremely important and it is essential that you ensure that you keep on top of your repayments for a good credit rating. If you have missed any repayments in the recent past catch up with them.

Remember that accounts which have been in collections, even after being paid still remain on your personal credit rating for a period of 7 years. Hence paying them off will not make them disappear immediately.

If you feel like you are going to struggle with your finance obligations, then it may be time to see your bank or financial institution. Talk to them and seek independent financial advice about the best way to resolve your financial stress without letting it adversely affect a good credit rating.

Having a brand new credit card is tempting but do not accept credit unless needed . This not only creates unwanted credit but also hampers your personal credit rating as it causes an additional enquiry and adds to your list of balances owed/ credit limit available.

If you have not had a credit file for very long, just to show enquiries on your credit report, do not open up a lot of credit enquiries on your account at the same time. This reflects badly on your Fico credit score as this will show too many enquiries in too short a time.

If you have had a bad personal credit ratings history, to restore credit scores only get the credit that you need and start paying them off in a timely manner. This will improve your FICO personal credit rating in the long run.

Check your credit report as often you think fit to check whether you have a good credit rating. Ordering your own credit report does not affect your personal credit rating in any way.

Knowing how to improve credit ratings is not hard. By following these simple steps and managing your credit better you can vastly improve your Fico credit score and achieve a good personal credit rating.

Our country is full of such con-artists and thieves who always remain on their toes to make the most of even someone’s death. It’s a known fact that these thieves usually target those dead ones whom deaths are about to become a part of public record. Though some debt due to identity theft is not levied on the heirs, it becomes quite irritating to handle situation like this. You need to take some necessary steps to protect the identity of some deceased one and getting a copy of the dead one’s credit report is one of these steps.

If you are looking for getting a credit report of some deceased one online, you must keep this fact in mind that credit reporting agencies do not provide access to such credit reports without a validate will and this will is usually granted to the appointed executor of the deceased one.

To find out whether some unauthorized debt or other credit inquiry has appeared on the deceased’s credit report, you need to check these credit reports periodically and you can ask for these credit reports to the three major credit reporting agencies.

You cannot do this online and you have to request for it in writing and you also have to prove your legal right as the person behind for this information.

In this letter for deceased’s credit report, you have to mention the your name, address, request date, other contact information, relationship to the deceased, his/her name, date of death, date of birth, birth location and his/her social security number.

After clearly narrating all that information, you can write two or three lines and request the credit reporting agencies for the current copy of deceased’s credit report. If you want to place some notice on this credit report, you can also ask them for it. You must send this request through a reliable and certified mail service.

If you have a low credit score and bad credit rating then you probably have realized by now how hard it is to get credit of any kind. The chances are that you have applied time and time again and will have been turned away from every single lender; if this is the case then you could be tempted to shell out even more cash in return for your credit rating to be repaired.

There are now more companies than ever online who claim that for a “small” fee they can repair your credit rating and so make it much easier to get yourself a loan. However one thing you should remember is that no matter what a company such as this claims that it can do, no matter how much money you pay them they cannot do anything that you yourself cannot do. When it comes to repairing damaged credit ratings then this much is true but this is the only thing that is true and better yet you can do the same things without having the need to pay someone else to do it for you. All that a company does that offers you the chance of repairing your credit rating is preying on your vulnerability, the worst of these types of companies will even charge you thousands of dollars and they simply cannot the impossible no matter how much they charge or claim they can. For instance if you have got CCJ`s on your credit rating record then these cannot just be removed, anything else can be improved but it takes time and you can take the steps that are needed yourself to bring your credit rating back up to scratch. If anything by going with such a company you will only be shelling out money that you can ill afford to do and even get into more debt in the process.

A far better solution to get your credit rating and score back up where it belongs it to try and improve your rating yourself along with taking advice from a credit counselor. A credit counselor is totally different and they can give you excellent advice on debt matters and ways of bringing your credit rating back up. There are some that will charge you a fee for doing this but then there are some free one around so it essential that you shop a round and find one that provides quality advice but which wont cost you a penny.

Never be conned into thinking that anyone can remove any negative factors from your credit rating report, any claims that they can do so are pure lies. Shady companies such as these have been under investigation and while they aren’t all to be classed as charlatans they certainly cannot work miracles and repair your credit rating instantly as some claim they can.

To avoid falling prey to one of the scams then do things the right way and do it for yourself.

The sheer volume of a relatively new wave of crime “identity theft” is on the increase, anyone who has you social security number, your credit card details and any other personal details can in just a short time become you and seriously damage your credibility, life and ruin your credit rating.

With the advancements in the technology of today stealing identities is becoming easier and easier. The con artist is a smooth talker and can soon get your social security number and date of birth; from here they can carry on and make your life a living hell by running up a huge amount of credit in a very short time. With just a few details gained from you they can take out credit cards in your name and rack up thousands of dollars in just a couple of hours. However most cards are covered and although the most you would have to pay back would be around $50 this is only the beginning. Once your credit rating has been blacklisted, it is harder to get it back up again even if this wasn’t your fault and you were the victim of identity theft or fraud, which means that when you come to apply for credit such as a loan your chances of getting credit are very slim or non existent.

Even those with excellent credentials before the theft can have problems and this was clearly shown when a NASA engineer who had been with his bank for 11 years was declined a loan after identity theft. Another example of the devastation that identity theft can cause was the woman who spent three years trying to build back up her credit rating and as such was declined a mortgage and missed out on what she described as her dream home. Identity theft can take just a matter of a few minutes but it can take a lifetime to put right.

To ensure that you don’t fall victim to identity theft it is essential that you remain vigilant and take a few factors into account. Always make sure that you do everything possible to keep your social security number safe, your credit card number, any account passwords and any other personal information. You should never give out any of this information to someone you have never met or don’t know, even if this is a company, you have to be sure that the company is a credible one and that they aren’t merely “scammers” seeking your personal information. When shopping online it is imperative that you take care and don’t store your credit card information details on your computer and only shop with a creditable and well established company.

When it comes to your wallet be very careful of what you should carry around in it in case it were to get stolen. Never carry your social security number around with you or credit cards unless you really know you are going to be using them. You should also ensure that you shred your mail especially any items that have credit card numbers, social security numbers or any other personal details.

Some people when faced with desperation can make themselves easy targets to those with very few principles, who prey on the problems of others in order to make personal gain for themselves. When it comes to credit then almost all of us have to rely on it at some time or another. However if for some reasons our credit rating falls short then being able to get credit is impossible or you are charged expensive rates of interest for the luxury of being giving credit which leads to even more debt. This is where the “scammers” begin to rear their ugly heads with promises of fixing your bad credit rating and they have an arsenal of scams in their supply all of which you should avoid. Here are some of the main ones to watch out for and to be aware of.

Beware of anyone who claims that they are “in” with the credit bureau and that for hundreds of dollars of your hard earned cash can wipe the slate clean for you and bring your credit rating up to scratch in the blink of an eye. Your credit rating can be repaired but it cannot be done this way, it takes time to repair your credit rating and score and the bureau will not take a “back hander” from anyone.

Another scam that is widely used is the promise that if you part with your hard earned cash then the company can convince the creditor that you really don’t owe them the money at all. While it would be nice if we could wave a magic wand and make the debt go away in reality we know that this simply isn’t true, however it can tempting but you should avoid the temptation of this scam.

“Not only can we clean your credit record but we can also get you a loan quickly and easily by using our contacts”. This unfortunately one of the newest and also the more costly of the many scams that is travelling around at the moment, as the unsuspecting person is so desperate to get a loan they will often fall for the promise that not only will they be able to get the loan after being turned down elsewhere but also that their credit rating will be cleaned and they can start from fresh. The majority of these are nothing but conmen who will take your money upfront not only for the promise of repairing your credit but also take part of the money for the promise of a deposit on a loan.

Beware of those companies that if you call their special 900- number you will be able to get your credit rating fixed by taking their essential information that no one else but them knows. The truth of the matter is that this number is often a huge amount of dollars per minute and the person on the other end will offer you information is nothing more than you would be able to find yourself quickly and easily online while racking up a huge amount of money on the phone call.

Your credit rating can be repaired but you can do it yourself and the only thing that costs you will be the fee for your own credit report.
